PREMA set for home event at legendary Italian track
PREMA Racing will be competing close to home this weekend for the 11th round of the 2024 FIA Formula 2 Championship at Monza. The historic high-speed track in northern Italy, traditionally home to the Italian Grand Prix, is set to provide competitors with great challenges. Not only the speeds and track configuration, featuring long straights and huge braking zones, will be tricky, but the heat and tyre wear might come into play in a start-and-stop circuit with low downforce required.
The team worked hard during the summer break after Spa-Francorchamps and will be back fielding the combination of Kimi Antonelli and Ollie Bearman. Both drivers faced tough runs in Belgium, but they are coming from promising results in the previous rounds. After Bearman took his first win of the year in Spielberg, Antonelli delivered his maiden victory at Silverstone before doing it all again in the Hungaroring Feature Race.
There will be plenty of variables to take into account. The track was recently resurfaced and revised, with a new layout for the first chicane as well as kerb updates. The environmental components might come into play too with high temperatures and humidity. Low downforce and the emphasis on traction might put a strain on tyre management as well. Pirelli will supply teams with the P-Zero Yellow Medium tyres as the Prime choice, with two sets of Purple Supersofts as the Option.
RENÉ ROSIN - Team Principal
"We are ready to get back on track after the summer break and we are even more motivated to do so at home in Monza. We hope to make a further step forward relying on the work done so far and to see both drivers fighting for the leading positions. There is still plenty of racing left and we are working hard to leave an impression in the closing part of the series."
