PREMA Racing saw a promising day impacted by an unfortunate incident today at Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya, as the FIA Formula 2 Championship went on track for its Sprint Race at the Spanish venue.
Both drivers showed remarkable speed. Gabriele Minì had a strong start from P17, although an early melee cost him a few spots. With a solid pace, the Italian was able to regain some spots and save his tyres at the same time. Unfortunately, contact between him and teammate Sebastian Montoya saw Minì spin, while the Colombian-American, who was handed responsibility for the incident, was classified in P11 after making a pit-stop and recovering up to the top-5.
Despite a tough start, Montoya also looked strong, and with the chance to take off from P2 after a stellar qualifying session, he will be trying to get himself in the hunt for the win tomorrow.
"It was a hectic Sprint Race but it was useful to understand what we need for tomorrow. We got to try both tyre compounds, which is quite positive. We keep working, we will be starting from P2. We will try to understand what happened at the start, get a good start, do the laps, and manage the tyres."
"We did a really good start, gained a lot of places straight away and caught my teammate. I went a bit wide with him in T3 so I lost a few positions there. Then we had a very good pace and sent it quite hard on other drivers, gaining some places up. It was just about saving the tyres, and once the cars I had in front started having degradation, I attacked. Sadly, I got crashed out, and when I tried to rejoin, there was zero grip, I lost the car and stalled. It's a shame, but it was the only thing we could do to try and gain some points. We'll try to go again tomorrow."
