PREMA Racing wraps up challenging qualifying session
PREMA Racing wrapped up a challenging qualifying session at Spa-Francorchamps as the FIA Formula 3 Championship lined up in wet weather conditions for the Belgian event.
The session started with a rain-soaked track that progressively improved throughout the session. Zak O’Sullivan was one of the main stars of the session as he set a very competitive early lap time. In the closing stage, with the track rapidly drying, timing became crucial and the last drivers to complete their final flying lap got the upper hand.
Considering the circumstances, O’Sullivan still secured a positive sixth place, while teammates Dino Beganovic and Paul Aron dropped a bit further down the order in P7 and P11 respectively.
On a track that offers room for overtaking and many environmental variables like Spa-Francorchamps, the positions will not preclude a successful outcome especially with Aron starting from the front row of the Sprint Race reverse grid.
#1 Paul Aron
"Tricky qualifying here in Spa, conditions were changing throughout the whole qualifying. We started with wet and we had very good pace. Then the track dried up quite a lot and we were quite lucky at the end, it was basically who crossed the line last was the quickest. We were among the first to cross the line so we missed out on that. At least we are still in the top-12, we are starting second tomorrow and hopefully we can get good points from there. Then on Sunday we will have a long race ahead where we can make a lot of progress."
#2 Dino Beganovic
"Tricky qualy, it started very wet, then it was drying in the end and it was always a risk. The track is the best for the one who crosses the line last. We were among the front runners but among the first to cross. It's not too bad, we can race from here, this is a track where racing gets quite interesting. In both races we have a good opportunity to score points."
#3 Zak O'Sullivan
"P6 in qualy, quite a tricky session, started off very very wet, kind of dried throughout. In the end it's one of those things where if you are last across the line, the track was drying. Our lap was fastest and then other people improved, but still P6 is not a bad place to start both races, we see if we can make some ground, it looks like tomorrow might be wet and Sunday dry."
