Vesti hands PREMA Racing fifth win of 2023

R06 Barcelona - FIA Formula 2 Race 1 Report

PREMA Racing achieved its fifth win of the 2023 FIA Formula 2 Championship today at Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya. Frederik Vesti delivered a sensational performance in tricky weather conditions to secure win number 3 this year. The Dane started from third place after a difficult qualifying session and quickly moved up the order. After a promising start on wet tyres, he moved into the lead and resisted the pressure. Even when a drying track called to pit for slicks, the team and driver combo performed swiftly to bring home the win.

Ollie Bearman had a consistent run and secured extremely valuable points in P8. Starting from the 10th position on the grid following yesterday's pole-setting performance, the British rookie had a fast start and moved to P8 straight away. After the pit-stop cycle for slicks he retained the same spot to the finish.

With today's result, Vesti marginally increased his driver championship lead. In tomorrow's Feature Race, Bearman will start from pole with Vesti not too much behind in P8.

#7 FREDERIK VESTI

"It's P1 in the Sprint Race in Barcelona, a good recovery after a difficult qualifying. We started third in very difficult conditions, with wet tyres and having a contact in T1. We gained the lead early and maintained it. It suddenly dried up, and the safety car came, so we switched to the slick tyres. There was a lot of pressure, because obviously, the track was still slippery. We managed to pull a little bit of a gap and win the race, so great job PREMA for all the strategy calls."

#8 OLLIE BEARMAN

"A bit of a boring race for me. I made some positions in the first lap, and after that, it was a stalemate. We put the slicks and managed to pass Cordeel, but we got undercut by Verschoor. Overall, I'm quite happy, it was nice to score some points. Let's look forward to tomorrow when we start from pole!"
